Cyber threat response playbook for a small online retailer
Challenge
A small e-commerce business had grown quickly but had no documented plan for responding to a cyber incident. With customer payment data and order history at stake, the owner knew a breach or ransomware event could be devastating — but had no idea where to start or what to do if something went wrong.
Approach
K2 worked closely with the owner and a small cross-functional team to develop a practical, right-sized cyber threat response playbook. We mapped the business's critical systems and data assets, identified the most likely threat scenarios, and built step-by-step response procedures for each. The playbook included clear roles and responsibilities, escalation paths, communication templates, and a recovery checklist — all written in plain language the team could actually use under pressure.
Outcome
The business now has a documented, tested response plan it can act on immediately if an incident occurs. The owner reported a significant reduction in anxiety around cyber risk — not because the threats disappeared, but because the team knows exactly what to do. The playbook also surfaced two configuration gaps that were quietly addressed before they could become incidents.
